Perennial holiday favourite amongst British holiday makers, Calais is one of the closest points on the French mainland to England, with the cliffs of Dover easily visible year round.  As one of England's overseas territories for hundreds of years, Calais retains a distinctly British flavour, especially as it is home to the French end of the Channel Tunnel.  Although the town was unfortunately largely destroyed through bombing raids in World War II, there are still a large number of sights to attract tourists to the region - the town hall provides a canvas for the artist Rodin, whilst the Hotel de Ville also proves enticing.  The cliffs also prove popular with walkers and picnickers, whilst the German war museum is also a historical favourite.  Further afield, the beautiful French town of Saint Omer is a consistent favourite, especially when its market is on.  To the north-east lies Belgium and the Netherlands, easily reached by car on the E40/A16 motorway.

Calais is a major transportation hub for travellers between Europe and the United Kingdom.  Aside from being the location of the French mouth of the Channel Tunnel (which sees regular train services with the Eurostar), Calais is also a ferry port on the Dover to Calais route.  With huge numbers of tourists using Calais as the starting point on their European holiday, there is a corresponding array of car rental companies to keep up with demand.  Europcar, Avis, Argus, Alamo, Auto Europe, Budget and Hertz are amongst the companies within the area.
